Cleaning out the new picnic area
A small band of members of the "Thursday Group" set on at Fernald after a quick breakfast at Cindys in Sanbornville. The project for the day was to continue work on the new picnic area on the line by the stream in the area of MP S3.5.

As we set the cars on at the engine house, a few problems needed to be fixed on the cars. Both mine and Don's car would not start, his ended up being the typical Fairmont plug problem, and mine a shot ignition switch. Once we were all started up we headed east towards Sanbornville. Just after MP S5 we met up with the trail contractor who had a loader and a hi-rail dump truck blocking the rail. We backed up to the tennis court crossing and waited for the hi-rail to come down so that they could off load the stumps and cut brush the contractor was loading into it. While we waited we brushed out the crossing for the tennis courts to improve the sight line. The eastern end of the crossing still needs to be done. After the hi-rail set off, we continued east, meeting Bill Wheeler at Cotton Valley siding where he was greasing the switches and brushing out the sidings and sorrounding area of the high grass.

We made good time as the weather was great and there were no downed trees. The culverts and two beaver dams that I broke on the 16th had really shown improvement. The water lever was down about a foot to 18" below where it normally is, which is about tie height. This has allowed the area to really dry out, and I'll be keeping an eye on it each week to make sure that the beavers do not start building dams.

Arrivng at the new picnic spot we removed several rocks and leveled out an area for the new picnic table. We were also able to remove the old ROW fence (which was a feat in its own) and built a stone dam in the stream to create a good sized pool. With a good amount of work completed, we then headed to the Miss Wakefield Diner for lunch. After lunch we headded of westbound to return to Fernald Station.
